Mathematics

Math is in just about everything we do. At Tubman we challenge our students to meet DCPS’s expectations of excellence. Foundational of math is important starting in Kindergarten with number recognition, simple counting, addition and subtraction all the way up to 5th grade where they are expected to calculate answers to a variety of math problems using skills taught in the classroom.

We use numbers every day in our lives. Practice is essential. Keep your child interested in numbers when you go shopping, traveling, or making family decisions (there are usually numbers involved). It is also never too early to talk about money, savings, and expenses. Students can help with noticing prices of items (loose versus packaged, name brand vs. no-name brand, weight differences, etc.). They might find you a better deal!

Below are some of our favorite links, ideas and games to keep your child interested.

Topmarks

A free site (with some kid-friendly ads) from the United Kingdom that has many math games, separated by ages and categories of practice.

Hit the Button

One of our favorites from Topmarks. Click on the image, find where it says “play game” and start. This is a great site for practicing foundational math while having fun at the same time. Parents or siblings can play against the timer. Challenge your student to beat your score!

Multiplication, Division, Factoring

Three different games to test students’ knowledge of these skills. Students become familiar with the multiplication table and practice different levels.

Robot Addition

This is a multiple choice addition game for 5 to 7 year olds. It has three game modes: Addition to 10, Addition to 15 and Addition to 20. Each of the modes can be played with or without the support of a corresponding number line.

Toy Theater

This is another teacher favorite. There are games, visuals, virtual manipulatives, for students to practice not only math, but reading, art, music, and games like chess!

Teacher tools

Look at some of the tools we use in the classroom to help students practice, visualize, and manipulate numbers! There are clocks, number lines, counters, number charts, a place value chart, spinners, flash cards, dice…wow!
