Tubman Elementary School
2024-2025 Academic School Year FAQs for about our Move
Where will Tubman Elementary be next academic year?
Tubman is moving!!!! Tubman ES will at 800 Euclid St NW, Washington, DC 20001. This is the location of the Old Banneker
High School. It is about a 12–15-minute walk from our current location.
How do I get there?
The new space is about a 12-minute walk from Tubman’s current space. Families can walk or bike to space.
We are working to see if we can have some Tubman staff along the way and/or Tubman staff lead groups of students over to the new space.
We will share when we firm up plans.
From Tubman ES you would the 63 or 64 bus on 11th St NW & Irving NW.
You would exit 11th St NW & Fairmont St NW.
What are the transportation options for getting to the new school?
As of right now, The District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) does not
have any plans to provide transportation for students. Some nearby
transportation options are the WMATA Bus, which are #63 and #64.
Those buses are available on 11th Street as demonstrated below:
Also, Kids Ride free cards will be available as well for the 2024/2025 SY.
Families are encouraged to sign up for the cards this school year and a
new card will be issued by the end of September.
Is there bike and/or scooter parking?
We will be working with the city to install bike parking at the new site. We are also investigating internal storage spaces as well and will have an update soon.
Why is the school changing locations?
We are getting a new building! Tubman will go through a complete modernization of the facility and site per the Educational Specifications as stated by the DC Department of General Services.
Is the Old Banneker set up for elementary school? When can I see it?
We hope to offer tours to the community soon! Right now, the school is occupied, however, we will host our annual Back to School Bash and hopefully other summer events in the temporary space. Pictures of classrooms and common areas may be shared in future parent newsletters and at our Spring Potluck.
What are the school hours at the swing space/Temporary location?
The school hours are expected to remain the same – 8:30AM-3:15PM.
Will there be before and after care?
We anticipate continuing our partnerships with both Champions for before and after care as well as The Fishing School for after care. Centronia is investigating their ability to provide before and after care from Tubman-it is not yet available, but our hope is we will figure something out with them.
How long is the renovation expected to last?
Tubman ES will swing off-site for two years during construction. As mentioned, Tubman students will be at 800 Euclid St NW, Washington, DC 20001 for the two years. We will return to our new building in August 2026.
What measures are in place to ensure the safety and security of students at the new location? We will continue to follow all safety and security protocols and drills that we do at our current location. The DCPS clearance process will remain in place too.
What facilities and resources will be available at the new location?
The space is bigger so we will have more pull-out spaces, a full gym, bathrooms in our PreK classrooms and an auditorium. There are two playgrounds; one for early childhood and one for older students. There is not a field that we have to ourselves but there are community baseball fields and a basketball court. All of the resources we provide at Tubman will move with us including our community schools work, food pantry, laundry services, etc.
Will there be any additional support services available to help students adjust to the new environment?
We will hold tours and orientations in addition to our regular back to school bash. WE also hope to hold summer activities there so families and students can get familiar with the space. Our wellness team is coming with us so if a student needs additional emotional support, we will be ready.
Are all of the staff going to the new space?
We expect most of our staff to move with us. There will be some turnover as there is every year but almost everyone will move.
When is the first day of school for 2024-2025?
The first day will be Monday, August 26, 2024, for students in K-5 and Thursday August 29 for students in Pre-K.
Will the current Tubman Field and Playground be available during construction?
No, our understanding is that these spaces will be out of use as early as the last day of school and stay off line until construction is complete in August of 2026.
